I'm not too sure if it is a matter of not having the time to put your foot down, but rather employers don't want to "upset" their employees. Every employer wants to have good responsive employees. We try to employ good people which care about your business and somewhat expect that they will care for your business as much as you do. We want our employees to manage their own time and tasks autonomously and be the best that can be. We want them to be our friend and in this day and age, employees move to new businesses as quickly as they came you yours. We need to trust that our employees are happy where they are and will not just pick up and leave taking with them invested skills, other employees and potentially our customers. After all, we chose these employees for what ever skills they have and what they can bring to the company. I once heard that if you are the most skilled person in your business, you are employing the wrong people. It is hard work being an employer. You need to manage staff, accounts, suppliers as well as any other work which is required and picking up shortfalls from others. Trying to find that time to talk with employees is easy but finding the way to both be assertive, respected and friendly is much more difficult. It's not hard to be assertive with employees, but it does run the risk of "what happens if I upset them?" Will they take extra sick days, find another job? Firstly, you have to just trust that you are employing the right staff. Secondly you also have to trust that your management skills are up to the task and thirdly, correct and concise communication is crucial. Give employees understanding as to why a task is important and why time frames are important. Never be unreasonable. Respect and appreciation and the two most important ingredients for good employee relations. Be their friend without being too friendly. And when there is no time to manage them.... There is always time or you are not doing your job correctly.
